Director of Sales & Marketing – Automotive (Arlington Engineered Systems)

Job Summary

As part of a large acquisition and re-organisation a new role has been created for Director of Sales & Marketing – Automotive Engineered Systems. The Director of Sales & Marketing will ideally have experience of working within the automotive industry and be educated in a sales and marketing discipline or equivalent with an appropriate qualification.  This is an opportunity to work closely with the CEO of Engineered Systems.  You will have overall UK and European responsibility and accountability for Sales & Marketing.  This role will involve frequent UK and European travel with occasional global travel when required.

Job Description

Reporting into the CEO for Engineered Systems and based in Coventry or Newton Aycliffe the Director of Sales & Marketing will be responsible for the delivery of:

Strategy and Development

  • Overall responsibility for sales and marketing activities across the business
  • Create and implement best practice sales and marketing vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve business performance
  • Ensure that sales and marketing strategies and processes are in place to meet business objectives and operational needs in terms of price, quality and delivery targets and which enables the company to function and compete effectively in the market
  • Evaluate the challenges faced by the business and act to mitigate risks and develop opportunities
  • Contribute to overall business strategy and annual budget process

General and Task Management

  • Setting revenue targets for the company and setting key performance indicators
  • Meeting with the sales and marketing team on a monthly basis to assess company performance against KPI’s
  • Working in partnership with the marketing company to develop and execute effective marketing solutions to promote the business profile
  • Presenting sales results to key stakeholders on a quarterly and annual basis
  • Speaking at conferences and events about the company’s products and services
  • Devising and implementing sales and marketing strategies across the company and monitoring effectiveness
  • Keeping a close eye on the due diligence within the market place on sales and market competition and utilising ideas where appropriate
  • Overseeing performance management of under-performing sales staff
  • Working closely with the sales and marketing team in order to secure large accounts
  • Implementing a variety of new business initiatives to drive sales
  • Ensuring the organisation has an effective sales training programme
  • Working with key stakeholders on budgeting and planning
  • Negotiating agreements for contracts with customers and ensuring commerciality
  • Implementing an effective sales pipeline and lead tracking process
  • Ensuring the CRM is being used effectively and provides a competitive advantage
  • Implementing best practice in sales techniques throughout the department
  • Researching potential target industries and customers
  • Create and deliver consultative sales presentations using industry knowledge, market trends
  • Drive external and internal market knowledge and insights
  • Proactive engagement with industry committees and conferences
  • Take ownership of the sales and marketing policy, guidelines and any associated documents
  • Initiate and develop creative and innovative sales and marketing processes
  • Responsible for overseeing all aspects of sales and marketing activities
  • Lead the preparation of technical and contract documentation for issue and analysis of returned tenders
  • Develop planning and prioritise processes to ensure that multi-disciplinary resource is well aligned to maximise delivery of projects
  • Coordinate with manufacturing to ensure manufacturability of product while maintaining quality, safety and environmental standards and achieving cost targets in a timely fashion
  • Support project management to cross functional activity required for project execution
  • Report on sales and marketing activities on a regular basis to the CEO, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of the relevant Key Performance Indicators

People Management

  • Provide leadership to departments under control and coach, mentor and develop direct reports and manage a high performing team that delivers continuous improvement, added value and cost reductions
  • Set department objectives and monitor ongoing progress and performance
  • Ensure strong communication between teams under leadership to facilitate exchange of information and in order to implement change and improvements
  • Ensure that the function operates in accordance with any health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors
  • Responsible for developing the appropriate organisational structure, resource plans and culture to support the business objectives and customer deliverables
  • Provide leadership, coordination and coaching to the team, ensuring they are trained enabling them to achieve the operational and financial metrics within their areas of responsibility and succeed in their roles
  • Complete regular performance reviews, manage attendance, holidays, disciplinary issues and procedures as appropriate
  • Establish strategy and best practices for staff to ensure achievement of overall business objectives. Work with the sales and marketing team to translate site strategy into specific annual performance goals and departmental objectives. including KPIs, and to track them

Financial Budget and Control

  • Prepare the annual sales and marketing budget and forecasts and all Capital Expenditure proposals as well as ensuring compliance with customer and legal requirements. Manage the budget from identification to completion of projects
  • Input and hold responsibility for sales and marketing budgets

Relationship Management

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance
  • Work with the rest of the leadership team to decide which sales and marketing projects are the highest priority against the business targets and which can be executed with the available resource
  • Work collaboratively, negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate delivery and compliance with the sales and marketing
  • Communicate with stakeholders the impact of market and technology change and potential effects on sales and marketing. Recommend solutions without compromising quality or service while optimising cost
  • Contribute to new business initiatives and projects and review and communicate the impact on sales and marketing activities
  • Support Sales team in developing quote activities
  • Appraising and interpreting client requirements to ensure that technical, legislative and commercial aspects are delivered on each project
  • Liaise and coordinate with clients, members of the engineering team and contractors on technical and commercial issues
  • Leverage appropriate external contract resource as required to support projects and programmes and ensure that all required compliance projects are completed in line with regulatory expectations and that the top priority business projects are executed

Qualifications and Experience Levels and Desirable skills

  • Educated in a relevant sales / marketing discipline or equivalent qualification
  • Member of an industry related Professional Body
  • Responsible for the building and training of the sales and marketing team
  • Extensive experience in automotive industry
  • Demonstrable experience of leading a sales and marketing function with a proven track record in strategic leadership delivering effective sales and marketing strategies, policies, processes and systems
  • Proven track record of achieving sales growth and delivery of results to business plans
  • Ability to add value, reduce costs and make business improvements
  • Proven project management and supplier experience
  • Experience of operating and influencing at a strategic level
  • Knowledge and technical understanding of automotive processes, components and design techniques
  • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to optimise team performance and development
  • Excellent relationship management skills with the ability to engage, negotiate and manage key stakeholders and suppliers
